How do mature organizations communicate in the Copilot era?

At our latest Maturity Model for Microsoft 365 Practitioner Call, Tara Saylor revisited the Communications competency—four years after first helping to define it. Governance, “IA before AI,” and real Copilot use cases made it a must-watch.

👇 Full recap + next session with Pia Langenkrans below.

🔁 Revisiting the Communications Competency – with Tara Saylor

Our October session took us back to one of the model’s earliest and most impactful topics — Communications — with Tara Saylor returning to show how much has changed in the age of Copilot and AI.
Tara first authored the Communications competency nearly four years ago, and this time she walked us through what modern communication maturity looks like when technology, process, and people all move together.

💬 Key Takeaways

1️⃣ Governance and consistency matter more than ever
Mature communication isn’t personality-driven (“Tara knows HR”) but process-driven (“This is how HR communications work”). Governance, structure, and repeatability are the foundation of trust.

2️⃣ “IA before AI”
Copilot is only as smart as your content. Clean information architecture is what makes Copilot’s answers relevant — not random.

3️⃣ Human-first communication still wins
“If no one wants to write or read the content, there’s no reason to build the channel.” — Tara Saylor

4️⃣ Useful new tools
SharePoint’s FAQ generator, Copilot-powered summarization tools, and accessibility features like transcripts and real-time translation are changing how we share information.

5️⃣ Accessibility isn’t optional
Modern AI tools help everyone participate — including neurodivergent users and global teams.

🧭 Why It Matters

Communications sits at the heart of organizational maturity. In the Copilot era, it’s where AI meets culture — helping people connect, not just communicate.

As Simon Hudson put it:

“Nobody wakes up wanting to communicate. They wake up wanting to connect — and mature organizations make that easy.”
